Chatting in a dressing room, where his solely indulgence is a glass of pink wine, drummer Mick says: “We might sit right here and I’m going into some struggle story about snorting seven miles of cocaine.

“I assume we figured we did X quantity a day, and then some goofball received out a calculator and got here up with that seven miles figure and stated, ‘Isn’t that funny?’ And it type of is. But not in the context of the place I need to find yourself.

“There was by no means a acutely aware  determination on my half to cease that way of life. I feel it naturally just drifted away.

“I converse for myself, although Stevie (Nicks) has been outspoken about some of the decisions  she made too.

“It came to an end, thankfully. Because, God forbid, it could easily have ended the really bad way — for sure, that could have happened. In some ways I’m happy I got through it and didn’t bite the big bullet. But I just had a profound awareness and a realisation that enough is enough.”

Bigger than life, both in character and bodily, 6ft 5in Mick laughs as he recollects the tale about coke — generally known as gak — that was first made by a former sound engineer.  But he provides: “I’m acutely aware that I need to converse appropriately about this. As a result of the romance of these struggle tales can adulate one thing which is  not a good suggestion.

Inner feuding

INTERNAL FEUDING

“The truth is the truth. But in many ways we shared too much information. Looking back, I can see an element of responsibility which I now regret not seeing before.”

The band’s  world tour arrived in London last night time, as they performed to a capability 90,000 crowd at Wembley Stadium, with a second date tomorrow before they head to Australia, having already crossed much of North America.

The gigs pack in many years of hits  and have acquired rave critiques  for a band that’s famend for its capacity to reinvent itself after a string of line-up modifications sparked by  inner feuding.

However as Mick admits,  the acrimonious exit of guitarist Lindsey Buckingham 18 months ago after he refused to go on tour might have marked the finish of one of rock’s nice names. As an alternative he was changed by two newcomers — Neil Finn of Crowded House and guitar virtuoso Mike Campbell.

Mick says: “Lindsey’s departure was traumatic and a serious change for the band, but we determined we needed to hold on. We made the choice collectively. In fact, we might have just stopped  and it in all probability would have been a simple point to stop, however we undoubtedly didn’t need to.

“Lindsay left pretty acrimoniously and we weren’t getting on nicely any extra, and sure, it is a happier ship to be on. We now have two new individuals in the band who have been massively accepted and welcomed, however in some ways it does amaze me that we’re still here all these years later, in any case of the ups and downs.

“Me and John (McVie) sometimes talk about it — we look around and say, ‘How did that all happen?’”

Mick confirms to me bluntly that he has not spoken to Lindsey  since their bust-up, and adds: “I don’t assume there might be some extent where the band’s former members all find yourself again in a superb place together.

“In the event you’d asked me that years ago I might have stated so, being the previous dreamer that I are typically.

“However now I just settle for issues how they are, and attempt to be civil and open. All of these pretty individuals have put their hearts and souls into Fleetwood Mac, and the franchise ought to absolutely honour these individuals in every  means, and it does.

“The music comes back to haunt everyone afterwards anyway — and usually that wins out in the end.”

He continues: “There’s little question these have been hard-lived days. For a while inside Fleetwood Mac there have been romances and that way of life you point out and the different stuff acquired forgotten — and we actually requested for that hassle.

“We have been too open about who we have been and what we have been doing — in all probability very naïve.

“All anyone ever requested about was ‘Who is sleeping with who?’ or ‘Who is angry with who?’ And also you start to really feel it’s a disgrace.

“Now they intelligently talk about what we did musically. That’s import- ant to us. We never wanted to make fools of ourselves too many times.”

As we speak Mick accepts the band won’t final for ever and says: “We’ve had a hell of a journey and we proceed to,  it’s superb, actually. We know that there’s an finish in sight.

“Individuals ask, ‘When are you going to hang it up?’ I’m requested, ‘Why are you still doing this? Need the money?’

“But think about asking Paul McCartney or Elton John, the Rolling Stones — massively iconic individuals, and you recognize they don’t want the cash. It’s simply a case of that’s what they do.

“And this is simply what we do. It’s a huge privilege — and it isn’t really any more complicated than that.”
